If I Write It, Will They Come?
I do love girly stuff, ya'll know that. I never met a lipstick I didn't like, and one need only delve into my make-up drawer to know that's the god's honest truth. If it smells good, I'll buy it. If it arrests the relentless onward march of time across my face, I want it. If it turns sandpaper into silk, I'll import a truckload and apply it with a trowel.
I like color and sparkle and shimmer and shine.
BUT....
I don't want to be defined by that. I don't want to be "the beauty blogger." Because I really have too much other stuff to say and I fear that maybe nobody would listen if I became known as the chick who blogs about make-up.
I want to be about Just Posts and a really good story that makes you cry and a "Hell YEAH" from my peeps when I go on a righteous rampage against that which is spurrious, injurious, inequitable, venal, villainous, malignant and mean.
I want to be relevant. Is that so wrong?
But does relevancy mean I can't embrace my femininity? Are the two concepts so desperately at odds?
I wish they weren't, but I fear that they are.
However...
I was thinking that maybe I could do a seperate blog all about make-up. I could feature tips, tricks, and bargains. I could even do a "Dear Abby" type thing, but instead of being about etiquette and personal quandry type stuff, it would be about beauty and make-up.
Yannow, like...
Dear B.A.,
I look like Freida Kahlo. How can I get a neat, defined brow, without looking like Betty Boop?
Confused in Poughkeepise
I might even put up some ads. I have steadfastly refused to do so here, because I don't like it when personal blogs are also marketing vehicles (no offense if you have ads, it's just my personal taste, not a judgement of your morality).
But, such a blog would be offering a service, would it not? And such a service, as well as my time, would be worth the few paltry pennies that some ads would bring in, wouldn't it?
Or would it?
You tell me. Would you read a blog like that? I'm a product whore, and I do read several beauty blogs fairly regularly, but none of them really have the kind of focus I'm really interested in. Most of them feature high end products that I can't afford, and are often written by women who are young and single.
These gals can choose to forego paying rent in favor of buying an ounce of Creme De La Mer and they can do this without worrying about their children having a place to sleep at night.
I would feature great beauty buys on the cheap, some product reviews, maybe tips on how to look fresh and polished without looking overly made-up or uber trendy...
For instance, I'm not really interested in rockin a look like this:
And neither, would I guess, are many of you.
I might even throw in an opinion piece or two. After all, I would finally have a platform from which to broadcast things such as my extreme dislike of the current trend that seems to be sweeping Hollywood lately in which perfectly reasonable women have fallen under the spell of some maniacal make-up artist, who has convinced them all that the nude lip is a good idea.
People, lips and skin should not the same color. It goes against the natural order of things.
And for God's sake J-Lo, everyone knows those lashes are fake even though you paid more those fuckers than I paid for my car.
Sort of like that.
So whaddya think? Be honest.

Let's see...what's the right word here? Oh right..
DUH!
If you write it we will read it...and comment! I think that a beauty blog without opinions would be like a burger without fixins. Really great potential but BORING. Please slater on the opinions with the face cream, darling.

My mind keeps looping around "Carrie" when, needing to raise some extra bux, freelanced for Vogue. Not quite the same, but hmmmm 'tis where I loop.
*I* for one think you could make any subject interesting. Having said that though, I probably wouldn't check in regularly ('cuz you know me & girly just don't jumpin' jive) but I'd be curious enough to visit once in a while.
What they hay...go for it!

Yes, do it!! I love your beauty product posts, but I wouldn't want your personal blog to be all about beauty because I like the variety of your topics here. BUT, if you started a separate blog, I think that would be great, and I would most certainly read it. As a rather frumpish 38 year old mother of two, I could use some tips on how to get a great look for less.

I'd love to read a blog that gives good advice about dealing with aging skin without spending your entire paycheck on an ounce of suspicious creams. I could use the advice, I have no clue of what kind of DRUGSTORE products to use. I know all about the expensive stuff I can't afford, but that is irrelevant to my lifestyle (cheap living). And I think that way too much of the beauty advice is focused on youth. I'm old, I need to know what do do with OLD skin.
And if you can tell me what the lifestyle lift is, I'll love you forever!

I think you're a genius and maybe you can score some free make-up samples.
(Hi, have we met? I'm Jenn, a free-lancer who would accept payment in the form of Lancome Mascara, since I currently must live with the far cheaper alternatives.)

i would definitely read that. :)

I love the way you write now, and as I live in Holland, and most of the american products are not sold here, and i'm not much of a beauty person myself, I would probably not read the other blog very often.
So, PLEASE don't forsake this blog for the other!

I have to agree with Marit... just don't forsake this one for the other...
That being said.. I'd probably, maybe, read the other.. but *THIS* blog is why I read you...

I've enjoyed your past beauty posts—and learned a lot—so while I would not seek out someone else's beauty blog, I would absolutely read yours.

ps For whatever it's worth, I would recruit my sister, too. She's much more girly than I, and I've already sent her links to your past beauty posts.

BA~~~~ You asked for honesty.
Nope. Wouldn't interest me in the least. I can read product reviews anywhere.
Your stories, however, can only be read here. That's what keeps me coming back.

I like having your beauty posts woven into your more serious posts. I don't think being smart has to be kept separate from caring about looks---does that make sense?

Firstly, I love your current blog and the fact that I never know what I'm going to get from day to day (beauty, racism, school and career musings...).
I don't read other beauty blogs because I feel they don't apply to me.
Having said that, I LOVE your beauty posts because they're so down-to-earth and feature products that are fun and inexpensive.
And you and I are definitely on the same page when it comes to nude lip gloss!! Yeeeccch.
So I would definitely read! Product reviews that are useful and feature a product I would actually be able to afford. Opinion pieces that are written from the lens of a woman who knows it's about more than being "pretty".
What's not to like?

Since you will be looking for work, and were disappointed at not going to school - why not a compromise and go to beauty school and work in a spa - beautifying brides and bridal parties etc.
Could that work for you? It can be really flexible hours - part time or full time - and tips. High end spas want intelligent people serving their clientele - and because many people in this field are not intelligent, you could stand out and become something far more within the industry than most become.
Just a thought...

Heck yes, I will read anything you write. I don't care if you have a second blog and continue it as an sometime thing, I love them all.

I think doing posts about beauty is a great idea - but if you're not totally into doing an entirely seperate blog, why not do guest posts on one already established? I know you mentioned you don't want to b/c many of them aren't what you're looking for, but personally I like chic-critique.com. They blog about items real people can afford, and do address age issues as well. I think you'd be a great fit. :)

Here's the thing in coming late to the party - I get to read all the comments before voicing mine. It lends itself to such originality.
I'm thinking, after serious consideration, that while it might be fun for you for awhile, I think that maintaining 2 sites would end up in one eventually suffering.
How about "Girly'ing it Up" here, just once a month?
Although the vicarious thought of you receiving all sorts of promotional freebies does seem very tempting...

I'd read it, and maybe even submit a question or two...
I will offer up a small suggestion, though. There's been some drama lately about pirating peoples' ideas and one of the sticking points is a beauty advice/product column, specifically concerning Mrs. Fussypants' Fight the Frumps posts being too similar to Amalah's Advice Smackdown column on Alpha Mom. I don't read either one and can't offer an opinion on the matter, but I mention it just to plant the idea in your head that it might be a good idea to poke around some and make sure your originality is all yours. I believe it is, because I can't remember seeing any kind of beauty/advice blog that talks about the best values on the market and not the highest end stuff. I specifically remember Amalah talking about how if it's drugstore product, it's shit, and I don't buy that. I like some drugstore stuff, and I like some Sephora stuff. So I think your posts speak to both those sides of my interest in the matter. I will also say that I'm pretty busy, and also on a budget, so I appreciate your having done the legwork for me and being able to trust your judgment as well as knowing following your advice won't break my bank.
I say do it. With care.

I can't give you input on the ads part of it ~ I'd be interested to see how much revenue comes from it though. I would definitely enjoy reading the beauty blog, though ~ and I say if it makes you happy, go for it! :)

Late coming to this but just to add my 2 cents - I like your occasional beauty posts. I'm not really into all the makeup stuff and if forming another blog for beauty would cut into your time here, especially once you get a job, then I would suggest you not. Otherwise, if you think you could handle both, go for it.

I enjoy your blog and would definitely read a beauty blog not written by a teen or 20-something who knows nothing about real women who have gaggles of kids and bills and limited funds for goodies like beauty products. Wow, that is one long sentence!

A Beauty Blog would be great!! You could be called the Beauty Antagonist! I'm with you on the nude lips thing...GROSS!! Since men don't understand make-up at all, we need good advice. Some makeup just doesn't work and even when I was an Avon Lady, I would cringe at some of the colors. It's also important to consider all the different skin types! Since we all trust you with our lives (at least I do!), it would be nice to get some honest advice about what works and more importantly what works for those of us on a budget!! A shoe post wouldn't hurt either!! :) You write it, I will come, with bells on!! Hugs!!
