Hey, Guess What?
Yeah, my son...you know...THE VICTIM.
Because we were redistricted last year, my son is attending his current school under a provision for those who wished to remain at the old school for their last year of Elementary education. Because my son is not particularly adaptable, and struggles with changes, we felt it was in his best interest to keep him there.
That is a decision I am right now regretting.
Regardless...the terms of this agreement state that attendance is a factor in granting that privilege. Now that he has been absent in excess of ten days, they can kick him out, aaaaaaaaaaaaaall nice and legal like.
And, he is being denied the opportunity to take the CRCT, which he MUST have to move on to sixth grade next year. Their position is that unless he is in attendace, he doesn't have the right to take the test.
I told you the principal was a bully. See, I can't win. I've accepted that. I don't have a team of legal eagles and iron clad policy to back me up. But I won't give in either.
So, instead of actually addressing or resolving the problem, they are just going to make it go away. And in the process, they are going to further punish one already very demoralized ten year old boy.
Incidentally, throughout this whole debacle, she has refused to consider the things that occurred as bullying. She says that Diminutive One is merely "uncomfortable" around this other child. I knew she was devious and evil, but I never thought she would try to place the blame in the victims's lap. I should have.
So I guess the decision has been made for us. Without the CRCT he can't be enrolled in a public 6th grade anywhere in Georgia. He will be homeschooled next year.
Nice, huh?
Hey, Atlanta Journal/Constitution....Cawl me. I think I got a story for ya.
P.S. If you live in Georgia, it might be that your child attends the same school. Does that frighten you? It should. I would love to trumpet her name and that of the school all over the internets, but that's not very prudent from a privacy standpoint, and probably a legal one as well. If you want to know, email me.

Good luck with the homeschooling. I very much admire people who homeschool as if I'm honest I would just never have the patience. I think [if I'd known] I could have managed when they were little [ABC's and all] but after that......well out of my league.
BEst wishes

It sucks extra hairy monkey butt that the choice is being forced on you. I trust though, that D.O. will thrive and all will be well. So it has been written, so it shall be done.
Peace to you all.

What a joke.
Almost as bad as the Canadian educational system.

Go right ahead and trumpet her name. ANd do it in your local paper. Loud and clear. Believe me, it is NOT illegal if you can back it up. Obviously you can. Bitch. I know you don't want to go back there, but if you do want to get back at her, call me. I do this for a living and I am MEAN MEAN MEAN and will stand up to ANY bully (you must know that, right?).
Funny timing, because my other friend from your city, the one who is spending huge bucks sending her kid to the hippy dippy tony Paidia school (sure that's spelled wrong) emailed and then called me today with a similar tale of woe, and I have begged her to have her son come up here once school is over there so he can experience friends in school. We don't get out until the 23rd so he could spend a couple of weeks here and have a blast.
Let me know what I can do to help with the homeschooling.

didn't you know that the victim of bullying is always the one at fault, and always the one who has to change, and be understanding of the situation and make allowances for the one doing the bullying?! Grrrr. My eldest DD got told this everytime we went to the teacher about a certain child in her class - and the teacher never denied that this kid was doing the bullying!!!
BUT - karma rolled around. My DD got offered a place at 2 top schools for high school, while the bully had to go to the in-zone school (which is not a good school at all). And she's loving her new, girls only, small very caring high school. Go Marist College!
Anyhoo...
The universe obviously wants DO homeschooled. By you.
Therefore, you will be just great.
And we're all here to support you and DO in the journey.

I'm just catching up with everything... I'm so sorry this is happening to you. To both of you. Hell, to your whole family.
Just know that if you have to homeschool next year or until he gets his high school diploma, you CAN do it.

Unbelievable. I'm truly stunned, although I guess I shouldn't be.
Please, call the newspaper. Or your local TV station. If it's happening to your son, it's happening to other kids too. Schools talk a big game about their anti-bullying programs/policies, but clearly at this school, it means nothing. Please call them out, as publically as you can. Please.

there are a million attorneys that would represent you pro bono. This, is bullshit.

Holy CRAP.
I am dumbfounded.
And you know...maybe make a call to your local newspaper. This is a good story (from a journalist's point of view), and it's a story people should know about.

I'm with those who have suggested a letter to the newspaper. It's hard because of the privacy issues - but that's what the principal is counting on.

If you ever want to talk as you get started on this journey, email me. I know you can do it. That principal sucks.

BA, your first step is to mail this article:
http://www.feministe.us/blog/archives/2009/04/21/another-11-year-old-boy-commits-suicide-after-homophobic-bullying/
to your principal, the superintendent, and the teacher, all return receipt requested. Ask them if they are willing to take the responsibility of YOUR child being suicidal over bullying and if not, WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?
That's the first piece of evidence you'll have, and if they ignore it (they will) it will certainly be damning on their part.
Good luck!

It's time to petition the school board and contact an attorney don't you think?
Were the parents of this bully ever contacted? What this kid is doing is considered harassment in every other state.
You have rights sweetie and so does your son.

Oh and PS - it's media time. Newspapers and your local channels. In this day an age no one should ever be bullied.

I'm not sure if this applies or not but I got the following advice about a similar situation. If I recall correctly your son has a diagnosis? has a 504 or IEP?
If so your son is disabled and as such is protected by Civil Rights laws. This bullying of your son breaks the law. Please do the following:
1. Call the Office for Civil Rights and file a discrimination complaint about these incidents. Here is the website with the instructions/info:
http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ocr/docs/howto.html?src=rt
2. Send a letter to the Superintendent re. the whole situation attach a copy of the Dear Collegue letter that specifically directs all Superintendents/school staff to not only stop disability harassment but also to prevent it...i.e. have school wide programs in place to foster an environment/school behavior of tolerance. You want a meeting with the Superintendent and Principal of the school and you want to know in writing why the SD staff at this school was unable to neither stop nor prevent these incidents. Here is the copy of the letter:
http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ocr/docs/disabharassltr.html
And in your letter to the Superintendent, you want him to do the following:
a. You want the Superintendent to have the parents/guardians of this kids called and informed about Disability Harrassment and that they will stop or be suspended.
b. If any of these kids are in any of your son's classes, they will be removed and schedules changed. If that does not stop it, they should be transferred.
c. You expect that all the staff will work to rally the support of the staff and students around the disabled children in the school...per the directive from OCERS. You want to know what they are going to do about this.
3. Contact your state Board of Education Division of Exceptional Learners/Special Ed whatever. Your son should already be on a 504 or some designation for health problems. File a complaint with your state.
The Superintendent will then have 2 complaints and Fed and State officials out to find out what is going on. Good.
There is absolutely no reason that your son should endure any comments like these ever. Your son has an equal right to receive a Free Appropriate Public Education as much as possible with his peers. If there are peers that the staff is unable to control...those peers should be removed not your son. You want immediate action from the Superintendent...and he better do it while you are in the office.

I'd be happy to leak this information to your local media. No problemo. Journalists protect their sources - or they did in the good old days of Deepthroat.

Oh wow... I just can't believe this is happening to you and your son. I'm glad we weren't in Georgia still when my kids were in school. Holy crap. So sorry and good luck with homeschooling!! I have a feeling D.O. is going to be MUCH better off... and still proud of you for standing up for him!
