Blogs Are Stupid

Doesn't anyone believe in Dear Diary anymore? What happened to the joy of putting actual pen to paper? And why does every ordinary Jane and John think they can write well enough to burden the world with their scribblings? It’s a mystery that badly needs solving. My first entry contains my thoughts about blogging and will set your expectations. The rest will probably be stream of consciousness garbage, much like you’ll find on any other blog. Perhaps we will both come away enlightened.

How to Make a Doubter Cry

This song has gained a lot of attention this week due to American Idol. The kid who sang it is undeniably easy on the eyes, but I wanted to hear it done by someone with some real vocal chops.

The Jeff Buckley version for me, was just "meh". Same with Rufus Wainwright. Don't shoot me, but I find both their voices a little whiny and nasal. Alison Crowe's version is beautiful, but a little over the top. The beauty of this song is it's purity and simplicity (though it is a complicated piece musically and vocally). Leonard Cohen's version is interesting. His voice is like a warm blanket.

But this....wow. K.D., baby...thanks.

(Pardon the meagre offering today. I am on the tail end of a three day migraine.)

I really like John Cale's version from the movie Basquiat. It's not as "look at every note I can hit" as Jeff Buckley's, and Rufus's is awful.

she is, in my opinion, the epitome of a perfect vocalist. every note that comes out of her mouth is pure. i want to BE her.

You would love the John Cale version as Kathy mentioned.

This version by KD has always given me chills. Listen to her version of Neil Young's Helpless as well.

Saw her in concert forever ago before she became big, she was a skinny little cowpunk back then.

I like the Rufus version, only because the k.d. version was in-store play last year. I think I over heard it, unfortunately.

    I do love this song.

However, I think a 5-year moratorium on covering it should be declared. It's hard to do well, and every version begs comparison.

That said, I do love my k.d.lang.

    Hope your migraine is easing.

    I've only ever heard Rufus...
    But I love the song!

Hope the migraine is gone soon, Mama.

I love that song, every version of it. However, my favorite was one sung by this guy we called Princess in college. He did it at a cabaret performance and it has never been touched since. One thing I love about this song is everyone sings different lyrics.

That is, hands down, one of my favorite songs, ever.

Now, go put some ice on your neck and close your eyes.

Nobody sings like k.d. lang. I think heaven sounds like her singing. But I like the Jeff Buckley version. The kid on Idol, however? Worse than meh.

Hope your noggin feels a bit better today!

Ok, I searched the AI performance (since I don't have TV). No. I mean, it was ok and God love him for picking that song but...

K.D., on the other hand, does this nicely. And, I have to admit, I like Rufus and Jeff as well.

Oh, I LOVE Jeff Buckley... His voice is tragically beautiful to me...

KD sang it incredibly. She has a voice with volume.

I love that song and have always liked KD.

She is so masculine looking and that song is so powerful when she sings it that it makes me want to become a lesbian just so I can marry her! Oh wait, not yet in our country. (It doesn't count if it doesn't count in every state.)

One of my favorite songs, ever.

The lyrics break my heart over and over again.

I don't watch Idol, but am cringing at just the thought of one of them performing it.

I'm seriously loving this version. Thanks for exposing me to it.

Now I have to say, what in the hell does she have on?

Brandi Carlile also does a version live that brought me to tears when I heard it. K.D.'s version is lovely, too.
